Mikkalos son of Ptolemaios alias Petheus the elder

TM Arch id: 602

Quick facts
Greek
private: family archive (2 generations)
Found in: 00a - Karanis (Kom Aushim)
AD01 AD02
Also called archive of Mikkalos, landowner of Karanis

Protagonist: Mikkalos (Go to TM People)

Description: This family archive consists of at least 10 papyri now kept in London and Berlin (AD 74-105 or later). Two copies (or drafts) of the will of Petheus the elder, found in Karanis house B17, do rather not belong to the archive because of their acquisition history, but provide valuable information on the family. The protagonist is Mikkalos, who acted once as kyrios for his wife Tapontos, but also his father (Petheus the elder) and his brother (Petheus) appear independently in two documents. This Karanis family of Egyptian villager status was well-off, owning village properties, slaves, animals and agricultural land not only near Karanis, but also in Bakchias. The archive is described in detail by Claytor 2020, p. 31-35.

Publication: Claytor / Elmaghrabi, BASP 55 (2018), p. 219-227; Borrelli, BASP 56 (2019), p. 299-300; Claytor, BASP 57 (2020), p. 19-42

Studies: Claytor, BASP 57 (2020), p. 31-35
