Description: No consensus exists about the protagonist(s). They may have belonged to one man who lived in Thebes, a centre of magic in Roman times. The collection could also be a product of a temple library formed by a community of Egyptian priests. The Theban Library also contains non-magical contents (literary & astrological texts, and alchemical recipes). The magical papyri were written in Demotic and Greek. Greek words occur in the Demotic fragments and vice versa. A few brief spells were added in “mysterious” scripts: Hieratic, Nubian and Old Coptic glosses.
