Amenothes son of Parates, mortuary priest, and daughter Senmonthis

TM Arch id: 705

Quick facts
bilingual: Demotic, Greek, Demotic-Greek, Greek-Demotic
private: tax receipts archive
Found in: U04b - Memnoneia - Djeme (Thebes west)
BC03

Protagonist: Amenothes son of Parates (Go to TM People)

Description: Archive of tax receipts issued to Amenothes son of Parates (276-251 BC) and his daughter Senmonthis (262-244 BC). They appear together as taxpayers in two receipts. The receipts testify a.o. to the payment of the yoke tax, salt tax, burial tax and price of oil. Amenothes is once called a choachyte (wȝḥ-mw, O. Taxes 1 23) and may be identified with his namesake, a “pastophoros of Amenophis in the west of Thebes” found in P. Phil. Dem. 13 (TM 43907) of 273 BC, a papyrus which is part of another archive (TM Arch 203). As suggested by Muhs, P. BM Reich p. 82 no. 10078 (TM 46060) of 271 BC, a receipt for the burial tax on papyrus, may have come from the same find as the ostraca because of its acquisition history (acquired by Wilkinson, who also presented several of Amenothes’ ostraca).

Studies: O. Chicago Muhs, 2005, p. 108-9 (taxpayer 6) and p. 117 (father of taxpayer 19); O. Taxes 2, 2011, p. 269
