Work

Highlights

P.Brooklyn 47.218.3 : on October 4, 651 BC, the priest of Amun Harsiese went over to the priesthood of Montu-Re-Harakthi. His change of job was confirmed by an oracle of Amon and the verdict was written down, with a vignette, and signed by 49 prophets of Amon and Montu, each in his own hand. The result is a magnificent papyrus, 5 m. long, with the signatures of all the priestly elite of Thebes. Some sign in abnormal hieratic, others have adopted the new script from the North, demotic. Edition by R.A. Parker, A Saite Oracle Papyrus from Thebes in the Brooklyn Museum, 1962.

History

The papyrological collection of Brooklyn is of diverse origin, e.g. the Long Island Historical Society, the Abbott Collection of the New York Historical Society and the collection of Charles Edwin Wilbour (1833-1896). The Wilbour collection is particularly rich in ostraca, especially from Elephantine. The papyri come in the main from the Fayum, and include several specimens from the large find of Soknopaiou Nesos.

Six important demotic papyri from Ptolemaic Memphis were first published by Reich and later by P.W.Pestman - J.Quaegebeur - R.L.Vos, Recueil de textes démotiques et bilingues, nos.1-6.
