History

In 1810 the Prince of Wales (later George IV) offered some carbonised papyrus rolls, found half a century earlier in Herculaneum, to the Bodleian. In 1843 the Library bought the manuscript collection of the traveller James Bruce (1730-1794). It included a Coptic Gnostic papyrus codex, which he had bought in Upper Egypt in 1769 (Trismegistos 107927). In the 1870 Greville J.Chester (1831-1892), an Anglican clergyman who wintered in Egypt for his health, made purchases of papyri there. In 1878 he sold a considerable number of pieces from Antinoe to the Bodleian for £ 20, and in 1887 presented others. In 1888 the Library acquired the beautiful Hawara Homer (LDAB 1695) through the generosity of Jesse Haworth (1853-1921), a rich Lancashire manufacturer, who had supported Petrie's excavation there. It came with the skull of the mummified lady in whose tomb it had been buried. Other papyri from Petrie's excavation in Gurob arrived in 1895; they were taken from mummy cartonnage and divided between the British Museum, Trinity College Dublin and the Bodleian. The Bodleian received 55 items, including a manuscript of the Laches (LDAB 3836), written probably less than a century after Plato's death. In 1895 Petrie sold the Revenue Laws, a large early Ptolemaic roll, which he bought just one year before, to the Bodleian for £ 80. Its editor B.P. Grenfell bought the second part of the roll one year later and sold it also to the Library in 1896, together with other papyri, which he had found and bought in the Fayum. Other fragments from the same source were given in 1896 by F.C.Conybeare. From 1900 to 1923 the Egypt Exploration Fund distributed papyri of the great finds at Bahnasa to subscribing institutions. The Bodleian received its share of Oxyrhynchus papyri, including Sappho (LDAB 3893), part of the lost Hypsipyle of Euripides (LDAB 957) and a fragment of Achilles' Tatius novel Clitophon and Leucippe (LDAB 11). In 1908 Flinders Petrie presented to the Library the finds of papyri, chiefly Coptic, made at Deir el-Bala'izah.They form the largest group of ancient manuscripts in the Library. In 1919 an Greco-Latin diptych was presented by A.H.Sayce, a great benefactor of the Library in other fields [Trismegistos 18820] In 1934 the widow of A.S. Hunt presented some papyri soon after the death of her husband; Since then, acquisitions of papyri have virtually ceased. The Bodleian ostraca are now housed in the Ashmolean Museum
