the Egyptologist William J. Bankes (1786-1855), who travelled to Egypt in the early 19th century, bought there an obelisk and a stone sarcophagus. But the bulk of his collections consists of 212 ostraca, of which 175 bear identifiable texts in many languages (Greek, demotic, Coptic, hieratic and Arabic)
