LDAB Search Results
I ran an LDAB search for Aeschylus (entered in the Ancient Author & Work) field, which returned only 7 hits, despite the fact that Aeschylus is listed as an author in many more files: the same search from the TM homepage, for example, returned 51 hits (while TM Authors returns 68 attestations). Searches for Sophocles (LDAB = 18 hits; TM home = 58 hits; TM authors = 67 attestations) and Euripides (LDAB = 130 hits; TM home = 223 hits; TM Authors 300 attestations) resulted in similar discrepancies.
I assume that the most grievous discrepancy is because a) the LDAB expects a user to specify author AND work, and because b) the searches I was running should have been conducted via TM Authors instead of LDAB. But it is nonetheless potentially misleading. I wonder whether it is possible to redirect a simple LDAB search for an author directly into TM Authors or perhaps to remove that LDAB search option entirely. Or is there a better solution?
Thank you very much for this very valuable question, which alerted me to an important bug.
It is solved now, and a search for Aeschylus gives 50 hits, as it should. This is still one less than the TM Homepage gives, but this is correct: TM 1282 is a petition which quotes Aeschylus and as such it is not included in the LDAB, since a petition is not a literary text. The difference with TM Authors is due to the fact that a search in TM Texts counts texts, whereas one in TM Authors counts attestations of each of the works of this author in texts. Take TM 59033, a single text with the hypotheseis of 3 plays of Aeschylus. This papyrus counts as 1 in TM Texts, but as 3 in TM Authors, since three works are attested.
So no need to go through TM Authors, at least not if your interest is in all texts preserving Aeschylus. The LDAB now works just fine for this.
[about the bug: After adding passage as a search facility, I noticed that the number of results for some searches was problematic. This made me realize that through this addition, something had gone wrong, which I corrected for searches for (authors and) works. I forgot to correct this for authors only, however, ... Apologies]
