Punic

TM Language id: 57

Language family and branch: Afro-Asiatic, Semitic (Northwest Semitic)

Link(s): Glottolog, Wikipedia (language)

Punic is the name for a variant of the Phoenician language which gradually developed in Carthago, a Phoenician colony. The script was also called Punic, although later stages which follow slightly different orthographic rules, are normally called Neo-Punic.

Trismegistos currently has only few Punic inscriptions, mainly bilingual texts. We have entered those in Donner / Röllig, Kanaanäische und aramäische Inschriften (2nd ed.). In the future we hope to work together with Corpus Inscriptionum Phoenicarum necnon Poenicarum (CIP).
