Conservation

Inventarisation

An inventory of the texts acquired in 1930 was made on the spot under the supervision of Medea Norsa (inventory no. 1-31) with a short description of the contents of the 31 folders. This inventory, slightly improved, with the equivalences between inventory and entrance numbers can be found in Aegyptus 27 (1947), p. 159-162.

Work

The new edition of P. Bon., now in progress, will collect all the papyri (the original 50, less P. Bon. 11-12, plus P. Bon. Ptol. 1 to 10), a total of 58 papyri.

History

The papyri were bought in August 1930 by Medea Norsa from Maurice Nahman, antiquity dealer in Cairo, on behalf of Achille Vogliano. The 12th of November 1930 the papyri were acquired by the Biblioteca Universitaria, assembled in 31 folders, with entrance numbers from 122811 to 122841.

In 1953 the collection was edited by Orsolina Montevecchi in 1953 as Papyri Bononienses I (no. 1-50). After the edition each papyrus was given three different reference numbers: (1) the entrance number (no. 121811 to 122841); (2) the inventory number (Norsa's inventory) (no. 1 to 31); (3) the edition number (P. Bon. I, no. 1 to 50). This has caused some problems to colleagues interested in single texts of the Collection. Nowadays, after the restoration and the new arrangement of the whole collection, it is enough to quote the edition reference. Cf. G.Geraci, Nuovi documenti dell' Egitto tolemaico e romano a Bologna, in : Proceedings of the XIVth International Congress of Papyrologists Oxford 1974, London 1975, pp.113-120.

The collection was fully restored in 1970. The main result was the rediscovering of the glass with Norsa's inventory no. 29 which Montevecchi was unable to find (see P.Bon. I, 11-12, Introd., p. 35). The fragments, all ptolemaic, connect with P. Bon. I, 11-12. The reconstruction of the complex, made by Willy Clarysse and Lucia Criscuolo in 1992 , has "created" 10 new papyri, provisionally called P.Bon.Ptol. 1 to 10. The first (P.Bon. Ptol. 2) is now published in P. Bingen 27. The new texts are archive documents from the reign of Philopator. They mention four southern nomes: Apollonopolites, Latopolites, Pathyrites and Diospolites Mikros; and an Arabia besides an ano toparchia.

All the texts in the Collection are in Greek, except for the bilingual (Latin-Greek) "epistolary models": 7 literary, 2 magic, the others documentary ones.
