Conservation

At the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, about 9000 papyri are housed in acid free folders in acid free boxes, the rest about 1000 are glazed between 2 sheets of glass. The entire collection is housed in an environmental room Temp 65 RH 45 %. Some of the boxes and most glazed papyri are stored in this room in metal cabinets from the 50's. These cabinets have airvents. Most boxes are stored on open metal shelves. The environmental room is sealed, fireprofed and alarmed. (Leyla Lau-Lamb, e-mail to the papylist, March 3, 2003). See also M. Kaye, Housing papyrus at the University of Michigan Library, Newsletter 19n (2015), pp.1-4

Inventarisation

The basic inventory is still a typewritten one, copied from inventory notes sent by A.S. Hunt (in 1920) and later H.I. Bell (written by Crum and Thompson for the Coptic and Demotic pieces); this was completed by a filecard having the location of the mounted papyri. The database built for APIS will replace this, and already serves as inventory for the published items. As part of the APIS project, work so far has been concentrated on the published material; the web site gives now access to ca. 2500 fully catalogued texts (with bibliography, translation, and link to the Greek text on the Perseus site); 600dpi images are available for ca. 1750 of them; note also that the conservation staff worked on ca. 750 of them before imaging occurred. Unpublished material should follow, though the level of its cataloguing will probably be much reduced.

Publications

Many papyri are published in the series P. Michigan
