Work

Rosario Pintaudi is now in charge of the systematic publication, and has access to the whole photographic material. At least three volumes have now been programmed for Hermes Publications in Oslo. International co-operation for a quick, accurate publication is especially welcome.

Highlights

MS 193, bought from Mississipi University with additional fragments from Duke University and the Bodmer collection , is a Coptic codex of the 3rd-4th cent. AD, containing the Passover homily of Melito of Sardis, a segment of 2 Maccabees, 1 Peter, Jonah and an unidentified text, and part of the famous Dishna Papers. It contains 136 pages (not numbered) in 35 sheets.

History

Martin Schøyen's manuscripts collection is one of the most important of its kind in the world. It includes 7597 items, of which 1052 papyri and ostraka from Ptolemaic to Arabic age. A checklist of the collection is regularly published, the most recent number in 1997. The collection is comprehensive of biblical manuscripts in Hebrew, Greek and Latin, seals, cuneiform tablets, materials from the Dead See, Coptic and Aethiopic manuscripts. Among the papyri, there are some beautiful pieces, both literary and documentary. There are biblical codices of the Chester Beatty and Bodmer type, and secular literature from Homeros to Euripides. The whole former Adler collection (including the archive of Horos son of Nechoutes ) is now part of the Martin Schøyen collection, which also includes Anton Fackelmann papyri and papyri gathered and sold by Kraus and other important merchants. The papyrologists R. Coles and J. Robinson have often acted as experts for this collection.
