Monumentum Ancyranum

The Monumentum Ancyranum (TM 385348 ) is a temple dedicated to Augustus in present-day Ankara, built around 25-20 BC. It is well known because it contains the best-preserved copy of the Res Gestae, inscribed both in Latin and in Greek on its walls. The text was engraved around the time of the primus inter pares' death in AD 14 and contains a personal description of his life and will. Since the original, erected on bronze pillars in front of his mausoleum in Rome, has not survived, this copy is extremely valuable as a testimony to the way Augustus wanted to be perceived by his people.
