Nagau Helmet B

The Nagau Helmet B (TM 860630 ) is one of a collection of over 25 bronze helmets in Etruscan style buried near Negau, currently Negova in Slovenia. They are now kept in the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna. Most date to the mid fifth to mid fourth century BC, although the priests that wore them only concealed them around 50 BC. Negau B is one of the few inscribed ones, with an inscription which has been read as 'Harigast, the priest', identifying the owner. The second part, 'Titeiva', here interpreted as the Etruscan word 'priest', is debated. The name Harigast, however, is definitely Germanic, and probably the earliest written attestation of this language.
