Heliodorus Pillar

The Heliodorus Pillar (TM 835414 ) is a column discovered in 1877 by the archeologist Cunningham in Besnagar in central India. Then covered with a thick layer of red earth resulting from its continuing veneration by the local population, the Prakrit inscription in Brahmi script was only found at the occasion of a second survey in 1910, and turned out to concern a Greek ambassador Heliodorus from the 2nd century BC. The column is still in situ today, and is now known to have been part of a larger temple complex.
